La Palma has ancestral vine varieties, pre-phylloxera bushes of old vines, on volcanic soils cultivated at different altitudes, from 200 to 1,400 meters above sea level, in an Atlantic climate influenced by the “Alisios” winds.
With the rise of the cultivation of banana trees in the coastal areas of the island in the 50s of the last century, many vineyards were uprooted to transform them into banana plantations. It is from the creation of the Denomination of Origin "LA PALMA", when the wine sector undergoes an important transformation; vineyards and varieties are recovered, new vineyards planted, the number of wineries is increased and the wine begins to be known outside the island thanks to the important prizes gained in national and international competitions.
Currently the Denomination of Origin “Vinos de La Palma”, in its 25th anniversary, has 18 registered wineries, 983 winegrowers and 537 hectares of vines, whose production in the last year reached almost 1.300.000 kg of registered grapes.
